Vibe LS is an exclusive, invite-only party in San Francisco, CA. It officially started in January of 2009 with its first ever Lifestyle party. With four parties already in Vegas and three more in San Francisco, Vibe LS has been found on everyone’s lips lately. According to it’s website, thevibeparty.com, “With a specific focus on the music, and through our screening process, Vibe creates an atmosphere that allows each member to feel free to escape the trappings of “the normal” club event and express themselves to the fullest.”
Kasidie’s Charisma Lane sits down with Josh and Jen of Vibe. This beautiful couple met almost 20 years ago when they both worked together at a Round Table Pizza in their hometown of Castro Valley, CA. Jen was making pizzas and Josh was delivering them! When asked why they were attracted to each other, Jen was quick to say, “He had a nice butt!” After an embarrassed laugh Josh followed with, “it was the whole package for me. I found her attractive and I liked her personality.” Well, I couldn’t agree more! Jen is a doll, and Josh’s butt is yummy!
Married in May of 2004, this couple has lived in Santa Cruz, CA ever since. Jen likes how honest and emotionally open Josh is. Josh speaks highly of Jen’s twisted and dark-side of humor. With them finishing each other’s sentences, I already can’t wait to get to know them and Vibe LS better! Check them out at Kasidie.com as Vibe. Their next Vibe party, called “Cabaret”, is set for Saturday April 24th. Drop them a line if you are interested!
Charisma Lane: So let’s fast forward to about two years ago, to when you came up with the idea for Vibe LS. Tell me a little about how that happened?
Josh: Ummm, it came from out my interest actually of going to some parties, and seeing certain thing we liked and didn’t like and then thinking about what we would do differently. We started doing some club nights and VIP sections with friends: large and small. I also started DJing some events. The idea just kinda sprung up from that. It was a natural progression for us. It was something I always had wanted to try. It went along well with my DJing.
Charisma Lane: So what’s it like being a husband and wife team working in the Lifestyle together?
Jen: It’s actually a lot of fun, also frustrating sometimes. This has been Josh’s idea and he has such great ideas, so I can just bounce off those ideas. The energy between us is wonderful.
Josh: I think we make a very good team. For instance, Jen came up with the idea to do our last Burning Erotic party and then I came up with the idea to bring in our own erotic artists. Jen has come up with really good ideas each time we have a party, which has kinda spurred me on. I think we make a really good team. And she has really come out of her shell, as far as being alive at the events and the consummate hostess. I see a huge growth, especially after our last event. Jen has really blossomed in so many ways and it’s been great to see and have that translate into our relationship. All the social aspects really add to the dynamic between us and that has been a big surprise.
Charisma Lane: Well it’s because she’s doing what she really wants to do, and you are always your best when you are enjoying yourself.
Jen: Wow, yeah, that’s true. We do have fun.
Josh: Yeah, we do!
Charisma Lane: Good! And how do you feel you’ve remained successful as a couple?
Josh: Well, I think we have always put our couple status first. We’re actually drawn to couples who are a little “selfish”. Not selfish in the sense that they’ll put someone else over, but that they do what is right for them as a couple first, while being respectful to others. We always make sure we are okay even before getting involved with some Lifestyle things in that way.
Jen: I think it has been about being best friends, and being pretty honest with each other… and open…
Josh: …yeah, I always say that the Lifestyle really blew our communication wide open, and it made it that much better, and we get to see each other for 100% of who we are as people. In the Lifestyle you see your mate as a whole person, with their own wants and desires, rather than just a part of a couple.
Charisma Lane: And do you think that kind of feeds into why you are so successful as a business partnership?
Jen: Yeah, I think so. I think we have our core beliefs - they run the same and it makes it easier. I think we are able to criticize each other pretty well too!
Josh: You mean take criticism, right?
Charisma Lane: That’s pretty cute! Umm, with regards to Vibe, what was the momentum that pushed you over the edge to start the party? A lot of people have a great idea, but they don’t always follow through on it.
Josh: Another couple that we knew in the Lifestyle that I had DJ’d for, stepped up and said, “Would you like to start your business? And we’d like to bring you on as a promoter if you do.” That gave us a kick in the butt. So we ended up co-promoting an event during the AVN Awards in Las Vegas as our first event.
Charisma Lane: So, what has Vibe LS taught you both as a couple?
Josh: Do you have this, Jen?
Jen: Yes…we are fine-tuning our communication skills.
Josh: We are finding ways that we need to communicate in business that actually translate to our personal life… sometimes it’s tough… sometimes you stumble!
Charisma Lane: With regards to Vibe LS, can you tell me one of your greatest successes?
Josh: Being told we are different. To us that’s our number one, in a good way. That is the biggest compliment that I could have received.
Jen: Yeah that is… I would have to agree with that one.
Charisma Lane: What about one of your biggest challenges? At least in my opinion, your greatest challenge for Vibe LS is that you are exclusive and unique, and there’s a delicate balance between whom you invite to the parties who have the right chemistry that you are trying to provoke and also with how big it gets so you can cover your costs, or whatever fun, unique items that you have at that particular party. And you don’t want the party to get too big, because then you lose some of the specialness that Vibe LS is known for.
Josh: Yeah, and also, I never like people to feel excluded. Jen and I decided if we were going to start events, we were going to put out a certain kind of product for a certain target market. Unfortunately, by it’s nature that does exclude some people. And excluding people is a hard thing for us to reconcile.
Jen: It’s also been a challenge to differentiate who has what to offer the party. It’s not only looks that we are going for; it’s that special umph - that uniqueness, which brings a good “vibe” in. It’s hard to tell with just a profile.
Josh: Many times we are making a judgment just from pictures on a submission for membership from our website, and that’s tough. We are never out to hurt anybody. We also rely on other members as well, to say, “Hey, these people are really cool.” We think our guests make our party, not us. We can set things in motion, and set things in place to set the stage for it, but it’s the patrons that really make it the party that it is.
Charisma Lane: Why do you think Vibe LS has become such a successful party, and so well know, in such a short amount of time?
Josh: It has? I don’t know if we could say that!
Charisma Lane: All my friends are talking about it, and that is how I found out about it. I certainly didn’t find out about it because you invited me to come out and join you! I found out about it because someone else told me about it.
Jen: Well, we are bringing something to San Francisco that has been missing…
Josh: …yeah, and being that it is a screened party - I know some Lifestyle people who abhor the idea of screened events - but there is a place for it obviously, because here we are doing it. And again the people that have come to the party have made it fun, and are making other people feel comfortable. If people feel like they can let loose and be comfortable 100% without, I dunno, looky loos, or people just rubber necking, they have a better time. That is what I see the people at our parties doing. It makes the party a real success.
Charisma Lane: Do you have a lot of people who come back time and time again, or is it kind of a mix every single time?
Jen: We have a solid core of people…
Josh: …yeah, we have a solid core that’s really supportive, and that’s been really amazing.
Jen: We’ve been lucky there. They are the reason that we have been so successful.
Josh: She is right. That is why we have been so successful, due to that core group of support that we have out there, and they have really caused it to grow.
Charisma Lane: What is your favorite part of running Vibe as a business?
Josh: Wow!
Jen: Lot’s of great ideas.
Josh: Really?
Jen: Absolutely.
Josh: Yeah, I guess for Jen, being creative. And for me, I’ve got to say, wow, it’s really the whole thing. I really enjoy setting the stage for people to have fun. Seeing people have fun is my biggest reward.
Charisma Lane: That’s kinda the mantra of the DJ, right- just being pleased that everyone had such a good time?
Josh and Jen: Yeah.
Josh: After the last Burning Erotic party, Jen and I were on this natural high afterwards from the event - seeing and hearing how much people enjoyed it. That meant the world to us.
Charisma Lane: So, see you are successful… you just haven’t admitted it to yourself yet!
Josh: I feel like we do a pretty good job.
Charisma Lane: Do you, as a couple, have your Lifestyle friends, and then everyone else?
Josh: Yeah, we do. I think we are drawn more to people in the Lifestyle… no judgments. It’s funny, we never liked the term Lifestyle because we felt like if it became your Lifestyle, then it was taking over your life, and yet here we are seven years later with this party.
Jen: But all of my outside friends know we are a part of the Lifestyle.
Josh: Yeah, I guess all my outside friends know as well, they just don’t participate.
Charisma Lane: Has owning Vibe as a business taught you anything specifically about the Lifestyle that you wouldn’t have experienced otherwise?
Josh: Oh, I don’t even want to get into that!
Jen: Really?
Josh: Yeah. There’s this whole weird behind the scenes relationship between DJ’s and other promoters sometimes…
Charisma Lane: Now I’m dying to know!
Jen: Yeah… really!
Josh: Well there are all these crazy battles between promoters which is not something I ever intend to get involved in…. you might easily get drawn into if not careful….
Jen: Drama?
Josh: …drama… yeah…. party promoters calling the cops on other promoters during their party! Weird things like that. We’ve heard it all, particularly in certain regions… luckily not so much in Nor Cal though. It is serious competition out there sometimes.
Charisma Lane: Really?
Josh: Yes! We’ve also learned that if we’re on our own, any problem that we create is our own, and we can solve that. But if we are working with someone else and they create a problem, we then inherit that problem automatically. So if I were going to have a problem, I would rather have them be ones we created on our own!
Charisma Lane: Yeah, and be able to solve them with your wife, right?
Josh: Yeah.
Charisma Lane: What is the most commonly asked question you receive about Vibe and how do you respond?
Josh: Hmmm….
Jen: I think the question we get asked the most is….
Josh: …I know it’s weird but “do you guys make money?”
Charisma Lane: People ask you that?
Jen: Yeah!
Josh: Surprisingly.
Charisma Lane: How do you respond?
Josh: We don’t talk about that really. We just say, “It’s okay”.
Charisma Lane: That is an interesting question! People are funny. This has been quite the learning experience. I just want to thank you both for your time and being willing to share so much.
Josh: Well, thank you for the opportunity.
Jen: Yes, thank you!
